The church is a splendid example of Franciscan architecture and was built at the end of the 13th century to house Franciscan monks. The façade has a pediment which covers the huge Gothic doors. It has a similar structure to the Basilica of St Francesco in Assisi with a single wide nave and beautiful frescos painted by the Umbrian Marche school, dating from the 14th to the 16th century.

The Madonna with Child sitting on a throne and the saints of St Francis of Assisi and Sebastian, dressed as horsemen, with the figure of the commitment on his knees at the feet of the Virgin Mary, is one of the most beautiful frescos executed by Matteo of Gualdo in this church and is preserved in a very good condition. The work of art dates from 1498 and you can distinguish the loaded expression of the St Francis figure to the right of the Virgin, seems to havean influence in the style of Bartolomeo of Tommaso, with its strong abstract manner, typical of the local artist. On the opposite side there are 2 very important frescos by Matteo even if they are in a precarious state of conservation.
