Porta Venere, one of the most beautiful gate of the town, is flanked by the two twelve-sided towers known as “Torri di Properzio”. The name of the gate was decided by local historians of the 17th century, who noted its relationship with the ruins of a temple near Villa Fidelia.

The gate is situated in a central area of the historical town center and it is joined to a notable number of important buildings, such as the theatre, the amphitheatre and the sanctuary. It is made of big white travertine blocks and it consists of three arches. Along the top runs an entablature stretching the whole length of the gate. Porta Venere was built in Augustine era, the same period of the boundary walls to which it is directly connected. Porta Venere is flanked by two dodecagonal towers built with local white and pink limestone; they are generally considered medieval. An ancient tradition has linked the name of those towers to the Latin poet Propertius an, according to another legend, the tower upstream from the gate was the Paladin Orlando’s prison.
The gate has had at least two restorations in the first decades of the 20th century.
Going up the winding staircase you arrive to the panoramic terrace from which a lovely view of the town can be admired.
