The industrial complex produced mostly synthetic ammonia and derivative.
It is the most important example of chemical plant. It covers the vast plain under the inhabited centre of Nera Montoro, product of two interventions made in 1915 and at the beginning of the ‘70s.

The plant of the Nuova Terni Industrie Chimiche is situated near the train station, on the right bank of the Nera River, while the other buildings are on the opposite bank that could be reached only through a bridge. The main aspects of the building are the web of pipes that shows different production stages and the incredible series of chimneys, towers and tanks of different shapes and building materials. The first plant, which started the current industrial complex, was built in 1914 on the initiative of the Società Idroelettrica di Villeneuve (hydroelectric company that produced chlorates). After the First World War, the factory closes down and the complex was given to the Società per l'Alluminio Italiano (Italian Aluminium Company). The production restarts only in 1922 when the plant was purchased and renovated by the SIAS (Italian synthetic ammonia company).
In 1925 the Società Terni incorporated the SIAS and started managing the plant, which was the only factory in Italy to use the Casale process to make synthetic ammonia.
From the ‘30s to the ‘60s the plant was extended and renovated. In 1964, after the corporate renovation, the electrochemical activity of the Società Terni became independent with the Terni Industrie Chimiche, part of the Finsider group. The activity was then given to ENI (Italian multinational oil and gas company) in 1967.
