Pottery in the museums of Umbria

An itinerary to discover the artistic and handicraft production.

The project aims to visit the museums of Umbria to discover the pottery that has marked the artistic and handicraft production in Umbria, from the Middle Age until today. As a matter of fact, many museums of Umbria boast important collection of pottery. Some of these museums are completely dedicated to pottery.

For the last five or six centuries, Deruta, Gualdo Tadino, Gubbio and Orvieto have been the most important centres of diffusion of the artistic production of pottery.

In Deruta, you can visit the Museo Regionale della Ceramica, the  Fondazione ceramica contemporanea d'autore "Alviero Moretti" and the Museo di fabbrica "Ubaldo Grazia Maioliche". The latter, together with the Museo Opificio Rubboli in Gualdo Tadino, is an example of a new production, strongly influenced by the industrial innovations, which satisfies the new needs of consumers weakening the position of the craftsman’s workshop while stimulating innovation and experiments with unexpected results.
In Gualdo Tadino it is also located the Museo della Ceramica a lustro: it is dedicated to the production of lusterware, traditional production of the area whose importance is also testified by the Museo della Maiolica a lustro "Torre di porta Romana" in Gubbio.

In Torgiano, the Museo del Vino (MUVIT) and the Museo dell'Arte Ceramica Contemporanea (MACC). The latter, the Fondazione ceramica contemporanea d'autore "Alviero Moretti" in Deruta and the Galleria Rometti in Umbertide are examples of museums specifically dedicated to artistic pottery.

Besides these museums dedicated to the ancient production of pottery, there are other facilities dedicated to terracotta for domestic use and building lateritious, very common in Umbria since the Middle Age. The history and technics of this production are explained in the Centro di Documentazione delle Terrecotte di Castel Viscardo and in the Museo dinamico del laterizio e delle terrecotte in Marsciano.
